As Salaamu ‘Alaikum Families,

Soon after Allah SWT rescued Musa (A) and the Bani Israel from the tyranny of Fir’awn, as they were looking to settle in the desert they happened to notice a display of idols in a community that they saw.  Some of them approached Musa (A) and said to him, make an idol like that for us, too.  Musa (A) responded by saying, you want to have something like that, when Allah has given you something better?

Embedded into their psyche was the idea that the culture that once surrounded them was a better one than their own.  They did not realize that what Allah had guided them to was far better.  What they had was in truth more beautiful, and provided contentment both in dunya and aakhirah.  It was simply a matter of realizing it.

In the midst of this glittering whirlwind of Christmas advertising, sales, tv shows, movies, and decorations, I am reminded of this story about Bani Israel.

It is true – we muslims living in the U.S. are different.  But different can be better sometimes.

Although our school does not acknowledge all the holidays on the calendar, the culture outside can overwhelm us with them. As we address what might be an inevitable topic these days, our school’s position is to remind our students that what we have in Islam is true, and it transcends the materialism we see around us.

(The ayaat of the Quran that were used as a reference here are quoted at the end of this email.)

Reference:  Surah al A’raaf, ayahs 138 to 141

Allah the Exalted revealed: And We brought the children of Israel (with safety) across the sea, and they came upon a people devoted to some of their idols (in worship). They said: “O Moses! Make for us an ilaha (a god) as they have aliah (gods).”

He said: “Verily, you are a people who know not (the Majesty and Greatness of Allah and what is obligatory upon you, to worship none but Allah Alone, the One and the Only God of all that exists).”

Moses added: “Verily, these people will be destroyed for that which they are engaged in idol-worship. And all that they are doing is in vain.” He said: “Shall I seek for you an ilaha (a god) other than Allah, while He has give you superiority over the Alamin (mankind, and jinn of your time).”

And remember when We rescued you from Pharaoh’s people, who were afflicted you with the worst torment, killing your sons, and letting your women live. And in that was a great trial from your Lord. (Ch 7:138-141 Quran)
